PhD in industrial relations, UCD; MBA, Open University; BA in English & French; Higher Diploma in Education, UCD; Diploma in Employment Law, Independent College, Dublin.

John has worked as a management consultant since 1999. Prior to that he was director of the National Centre for Partnership, based in the Department of the Taoiseach. Between 1988 to 1997 he held the position of general secretary, Civil Public and Services Union and was also a member of the Executive Council of ICTU. From 1981 and 1988 he was Assistant General Secretary of the Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland. John has published a number of books including: Organisational Change through Partnership (2010, Liffey Press); Interest Based Bargaining (2005, Trafford Publishing) and Employee Partnership in Ireland (1998, Oak Tree Press).

John specialises in organisational change and improvement in the unionised sector. His work includes organisation/relationship reviews, facilitation, mediation and investigation. He has worked on developing strategies to improve workplace relationships in both the private and public sectors. John has also chaired/facilitated negotiations to resolve many high profile disputes. In addition to the above, he provides coaching and training in the skills of negotiation, joint problem solving, and conflict resolution.
